The 9 inattentive symptoms

Clinical criteria (DSM-5-TR) list nine inattentive symptoms. In adults, at least five need to be present for six months or longer:

Missing details or making careless mistakes
Trouble staying focused on tasks, reading or conversations
Seeming not to listen when spoken to directly
Not following through on instructions or finishing tasks
Difficulty organizing tasks, time and belongings
Avoiding tasks that need sustained mental effort
Frequently losing things
Being easily distracted
Forgetfulness in daily activities

What it feels like in everyday life

Adults with inattentive ADHD often describe a "foggy" or overloaded mind, reading the same page several times, unfinished projects, and a big gap between their abilities and what they actually get done. Because they aren't disruptive, they are often diagnosed late — or not at all.

Inattentive vs combined ADHD

ADHD has three presentations: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. Your presentation can change over time; many adults become less outwardly hyperactive while attention difficulties remain.
